The upper back jaw is one of the trickiest places in the mouth to place a dental implant. Above those molar and premolar roots sits the maxillary sinus, an air-filled space that tends to expand downward once teeth in that area have been missing for a while. Add the natural bone shrinkage that follows an extraction, and there may simply not be enough height left to anchor an implant securely. A sinus lift solves that problem by gently raising the sinus membrane and adding bone graft material underneath it, rebuilding the foundation an implant needs.
Also called a sinus augmentation, this procedure creates vertical bone height in the upper posterior jaw. We access the area from the side of the jaw or through the implant site itself, carefully lift the thin membrane that lines the floor of the sinus, and place grafting material into the space created. Over the following months, your body integrates that material and replaces it with your own bone, producing a stable ridge that can hold an implant.
The patients who most often need this are people who lost upper back teeth years ago and have been managing with a partial denture or simply living with the gap. Others come to us after a molar extraction where the roots sat high against the sinus floor, or after long-standing gum disease thinned the supporting bone. It is also a common step in larger plans — full arch dental implants, implant-supported bridges, and full mouth reconstruction all depend on predictable bone volume. Sinus lift surgery is frequently paired with bone grafting elsewhere in the mouth when a broader rebuild is underway.
Planning comes first. Before recommending a sinus lift, we evaluate your bone height, the shape and health of your sinus, your gum condition, and your overall treatment goals. Sometimes the finding is that a lift is not needed at all, and the implant can be placed as-is. Other times the graft and the implant can be done in a single visit; when bone is especially thin, we place the graft first and allow healing time before the implant goes in. We will explain clearly which path applies to you and why.
A few things are worth knowing before you decide:
- Healing is measured in months, not days — graft material needs time to mature before it can support an implant.
- Active gum disease should be treated first, which may mean scaling and root planing or periodontal care beforehand.
- Smoking and uncontrolled sinus or allergy issues can affect healing, so we will talk through your health history honestly.
- You do not need a referral to be seen for an implant or surgical consultation with us.
- Comfort options are available, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation for patients who feel anxious about surgery.
Recovery, Aftercare, and What Results Look Like
Most people describe the recovery as more inconvenient than painful. Swelling and mild bruising in the cheek area are normal for several days. We ask patients to avoid blowing the nose forcefully, sneeze with the mouth open, skip straws, and stay away from strenuous activity for a short period — all of these protect the delicate sinus membrane while it seals. Soft foods, careful brushing around the site, and following any prescribed medication instructions round out the early days.
Over the following weeks and months, the graft consolidates into solid bone. We check your progress at follow-up visits and confirm with imaging when the site is ready for the next step. The result is not something you see in the mirror — it is the structural groundwork that makes a secure, natural-feeling implant possible. From there, our on-site dental lab helps us move efficiently into the restorative phase, whether that means a single crown, an implant-supported bridge, or implant-supported dentures.
Cost, Insurance, and Getting Started
Because a sinus lift is usually one piece of a larger implant plan, we go over the full sequence and the costs associated with each stage before anything begins. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice, and we welcome self-pay and cash patients. Flexible payment plans are available for those who would rather spread the investment over time, and we are glad to walk through your options without pressure.
Our team has cared for families across Ocala, Belleview, Silver Springs, Summerfield, Dunnellon, The Villages, and the surrounding Marion County communities for more than 30 years, and Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris see patients of all ages. If you have been told you lack the bone for an upper implant, or you are simply exploring how to replace a missing back tooth, we would be happy to take a look and give you a straightforward answer.
