Gum tissue does quiet work every day — it seals the base of each tooth, protects the bone underneath, and frames the way your smile looks when you talk or laugh. When that seal breaks down, the problem rarely announces itself with pain. It shows up as bleeding when you brush, breath that never feels fresh, teeth that look longer than they used to, or a tooth that has started to shift. Periodontal surgery is how we step in when cleanings and deep cleanings alone can't reach far enough to fix what's happening below the gumline.
Periodontal surgery is a group of procedures that treat the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. Gum disease creates pockets between the tooth and the tissue, and once those pockets deepen past a certain point, bacteria live in a space no toothbrush, floss, or hygiene instrument can fully clean. Surgical treatment allows us to access those areas directly, remove hardened deposits and diseased tissue, reshape the gum and bone so the pocket closes down, and give you a mouth you can actually keep clean at home.
Not every case starts with surgery. Many patients begin with scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning below the gumline, and respond well. When pockets stay deep or bone loss continues, we talk about the surgical options we provide here: gum grafting to cover exposed roots and rebuild thin tissue, periodontal regeneration to encourage lost support to rebuild, crown lengthening to expose more tooth structure when a filling or crown needs a stable foundation, gingivectomy to remove overgrown or diseased tissue, and cosmetic gum contouring for a gumline that sits too low or uneven across the front teeth. We also place dental implants and perform bone grafting and sinus lift surgery when a tooth can't be saved and needs replacing.
People arrive at this treatment from very different directions. Some have been told for years that their gums bleed and finally want it addressed. Others notice sensitivity along the roots because recession has exposed surfaces that were never meant to be uncovered — often the result of grinding, aggressive brushing, or long-standing inflammation. Gum grafting is frequently the answer in those situations, protecting the root and reducing that sharp reaction to cold.
A second group comes to us for restorative reasons. If a tooth has fractured near the gumline or decay extends below it, there may not be enough healthy structure left to hold a crown. Crown lengthening reshapes the gum and sometimes a small amount of bone so a restoration can seat properly and last. A third group is purely cosmetic — a "gummy" smile, or a gumline where one tooth looks noticeably shorter than its neighbor. Contouring handles those cases, and because we also offer veneers, bonding, and whitening, we can plan the gums and the teeth together rather than treating one and hoping the other matches.
- Good candidates typically share a few things: persistent deep pockets, recession or bone loss confirmed by exam and X-rays, a tooth needing restoration that lacks enough exposed structure, or a gumline affecting appearance and confidence.
What Candidates Should Know Before Treatment
We start with a full examination, including an oral cancer screening, periodontal measurements, and a conversation about your health history, medications, and habits like smoking that influence healing. You'll know which procedure we're recommending, what it involves, and why, before anything is scheduled. We accept patients without a referral, so you don't need to see another provider first to get an evaluation.
Comfort is planned in advance. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation for patients who feel anxious, and we use laser dentistry in appropriate cases. If you're nervous about the idea of gum surgery, tell us — that information changes how we schedule and how we treat you, not whether we'll help.
Healing, Results, and Keeping Them
Most patients manage recovery with the instructions we provide: softer foods for a stretch, gentle cleaning around the site, and specific guidance for whichever procedure you had. We follow up to confirm tissue is healing as expected.
The real result comes from what happens after. Periodontal maintenance visits on a schedule set for your mouth — often more frequent than standard cleanings — keep pockets from redeepening. For implant patients, we provide ongoing implant maintenance as well.
Insurance, Payment, and Scheduling
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file periodontal claims as a general practitioner. Self-pay patients are welcome, and flexible payment plans are available so treatment can be spread out sensibly.
Our team has cared for Ocala families for over 30 years, and we see patients from Belleview, Silver Springs, The Villages, Summerfield, Dunnellon, Lady Lake, and across Marion County. If your gums have been bothering you, call us and let's take a look together.
