You brush twice a day, floss most nights, and still notice a rough film along the back molars or a little pink in the sink. That's normal — and it's exactly why professional cleanings exist. Plaque hardens into tartar within a couple of days, and once it does, no toothbrush at home will remove it. A cleaning with our hygienist clears away what daily care can't reach, and gives us a chance to catch small problems while they're still small.
A dental cleaning, sometimes called a prophylaxis, is the removal of plaque, tartar, and surface stain from above and just below the gumline. Our hygienist uses hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers to break up hardened deposits, then polishes the enamel so the surfaces are smooth and harder for new plaque to cling to. For most patients this is a routine, comfortable appointment paired with a dental exam, and often digital imaging, so we can look at the whole picture rather than just the surfaces we cleaned.
We see patients of all ages for this, from children getting their first cleaning to adults who haven't been to a dentist in years. Parents often schedule back-to-back family visits, and we frequently pair a child's cleaning with fluoride treatment or dental sealants to protect the deep grooves of newly erupted molars. Adults who grind, who wear aligners, or who have implants and crowns benefit too, since those restorations need the same attention as natural teeth. Families come to us from across Ocala as well as Belleview, Silver Springs, Summerfield, Dunnellon, The Villages, Lady Lake, and the surrounding Marion County communities.
Before we begin, we review your health history and any medications, because conditions like diabetes, pregnancy, and dry mouth all influence gum health. We then check your gums for inflammation, measure pocket depths where needed, and perform an oral cancer screening. If you've had bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or sensitivity when you drink something cold, tell us — those details help us understand what's happening between visits.
Not everyone needs the same type of cleaning, and that's an important thing to know going in. A standard cleaning is appropriate when the gums are healthy or only mildly inflamed. If we find deeper pockets, bone loss, or tartar well below the gumline, the right treatment is scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning that may be done over more than one visit and sometimes with local anesthetic. Patients with a history of gum disease usually move onto periodontal maintenance on a more frequent schedule to keep things stable. We'll always explain which category you fall into and why before we start, never after.
Here's what a typical cleaning visit addresses:
- Hardened tartar above and just below the gumline
- Surface stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco
- Early signs of decay, cracked fillings, or failing restorations
- Gum inflammation, recession, and pocket depths
- Soft tissue changes found during an oral cancer screening
- Bite and jaw concerns, including clenching or grinding wear
Aftercare and What Results Look Like
Most people walk out feeling clean and comfortable and can eat and drink right away. If you had a deeper cleaning or tender gums, mild soreness or temporary sensitivity to hot and cold is common for a few days — warm salt-water rinses and a soft-bristled brush help. Any sensitivity that lingers is worth a call, since it may point to something we'll want to look at again.
Results depend on what happens between appointments. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between the teeth, and keeping to the recall interval we recommend are what hold the gains. Most patients do well with cleanings every six months; others need three- or four-month intervals. If grinding is wearing your enamel, we may suggest a night guard, and if gum problems have progressed, our team also provides gum disease treatment, gum grafting, and laser dentistry in the same office.
Insurance, Payment, and Scheduling
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and preventive visits are typically among the best-covered benefits in a dental plan. We're glad to file your claim for you and go over what your plan covers before treatment begins.
We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans when a treatment plan extends beyond a routine cleaning. Our office has cared for Ocala families for more than 30 years, with Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris leading the team and an on-site dental lab for same-day crowns, dentures, and denture repairs. Call us to schedule your cleaning and exam — we'll make the visit straightforward and easy.
