Mouth Guards in The Villages

Waking up with a sore jaw, a dull headache behind the temples, or teeth that feel tender when you bite down is rarely random. More often it points to clenching and grinding during sleep — and for athletes of any age, a single elbow or stray ball can chip a front tooth in a fraction of a second. A custom mouth guard addresses both problems with the same basic idea: a precisely fitted barrier that absorbs force before your teeth and jaw joints have to.
A mouth guard is a custom-made appliance molded to your own bite. We make two kinds here, and the difference matters. A night guard is worn during sleep to protect against bruxism — the grinding and clenching that wears enamel flat, cracks fillings, loosens crowns, and strains the jaw joints. A sports guard is worn during activity to cushion impact and shield the teeth, lips, and jaw from trauma.
Night guards are generally made from harder or dual-laminate materials designed to resist constant chewing pressure over months of nightly wear. Sports guards tend to be thicker and more cushioned, built to disperse a sudden blow rather than steady grinding force. Because the two jobs are different, we do not recommend substituting one for the other. Some patients in The Villages end up with both — a night guard on the nightstand and a sports guard in the gym bag.
Patients from The Villages come to us for mouth guards for a wide range of reasons. You may be a candidate if any of these apply:
- You grind or clench your teeth at night, or a partner has told you that you do
- You wake with jaw soreness, facial tightness, or headaches that start near the temples
- Your teeth look worn flat, chipped, or increasingly sensitive at the edges
- You have crowns, veneers, bridges, or implants you want to protect from grinding forces
- You play pickleball, basketball, baseball, hockey, martial arts, or any contact or fast-moving sport
- Your child or teen is active in school or recreational sports
- You are being treated for a TMJ disorder and need a protective appliance as part of that care
We see patients of all ages, adults and children alike, so a family can handle a teenager's sports guard and a parent's night guard in the same visit. If jaw clicking, locking, limited opening, or chronic facial pain is part of the picture, we also evaluate and treat TMJ disorders, and a night guard is often one piece of a broader plan rather than a standalone fix.
What to Expect From Your First Visit Through Delivery
The process starts with an exam. We look at wear patterns on your teeth, check your bite, examine your jaw joints and muscles, and ask about headaches, sleep, and sports participation. Existing dental work — fillings, crowns, implants — factors into the design, since protecting restorations is often a main goal. If decay or a cracked tooth turns up during the exam, we address that first; a guard built over an unstable tooth will not serve you well.
Next we take impressions or a digital scan of your upper and lower teeth and record how your bite comes together. Our on-site dental lab is a real advantage for patients traveling from The Villages, because fabrication happens in our own building rather than being shipped out and back. At delivery, we seat the guard, check it for pressure points, and adjust the fit and bite until it sits comfortably and stays put. You will practice inserting and removing it before you leave.
Caring for Your Guard and Keeping It Working
Rinse the guard in cool water after every use and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush. Let it dry fully before storing it in its ventilated case, away from heat — a hot car or dishwasher can warp the material permanently. Keep pets away from it, since chewed guards are one of the most common reasons for replacement.
Bring the guard to your regular cleanings and exams so we can inspect it for cracks, thinning, and fit changes. Guards wear out; heavy grinders go through them faster. Children and teens need sports guards remade more often as permanent teeth come in and jaws grow.
Insurance, Payment, and Scheduling From The Villages
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a General Practitioner, and we welcome self-pay and cash patients. Flexible payment plans are available if you would rather spread the cost out, and we will review your estimate before any work begins.
For over 30 years we have cared for families throughout Marion and the surrounding areas, including The Villages, from our Ocala office with Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris. We also offer emergency appointments — useful if a tooth is chipped in a game before a sports guard is ever made. Call us to schedule your evaluation.
