Bone Grafting in The Villages

Bone Grafting in The Villages

A patient from The Villages comes in after losing a lower molar years ago, hoping to finally replace it with an implant. The tooth is long gone, the gap has closed in a little, and the X-ray shows what we often see in these situations: the jawbone where that root used to sit has thinned and shrunk. That is a very common story, and it is exactly the kind of situation bone grafting was designed to solve. Rebuilding that bone gives an implant something solid to anchor into — and gives you back a tooth that chews, feels, and looks like the one you lost.

Bone grafting is a procedure that adds volume and density to an area of the jaw that has lost it. Your jawbone depends on tooth roots for stimulation. When a tooth is extracted or falls out, the bone around that site begins to resorb, meaning it gradually melts away. Over months and years, the ridge can become too narrow or too short to hold a dental implant securely. A graft restores that foundation so the bone can regenerate around the grafted material and form a stable base.

We place grafts in several different circumstances. Sometimes a graft goes in at the same appointment as an extraction, to preserve the socket and keep the ridge from collapsing in the first place. Other times we are rebuilding a site that has been empty for years. In the upper back jaw, where the sinus sits directly above the molar roots, we may recommend sinus lift surgery to create vertical room for an implant. Bone grafting also supports gum and periodontal work — we offer periodontal regeneration and gum grafting for patients whose bone and gum tissue have been damaged by gum disease.

Most people we graft for are preparing for tooth replacement. If you are considering a single implant, an implant-supported bridge, implant-supported dentures, or a full-arch option like All-on-4, a graft may be the step that makes that plan possible. Candidacy depends on how much bone remains, the health of your gums, your overall medical picture, and the type of restoration you want.

You may be a candidate for bone grafting if any of the following apply:

  • You are having a tooth extracted and want to keep the site ready for a future implant
  • You lost a tooth months or years ago and the ridge has visibly flattened
  • You have been told elsewhere that you do not have enough bone for implants
  • You wear a denture that has grown loose as your jaw ridge has changed shape
  • You have bone loss from periodontal disease around remaining teeth
  • You need upper back implants and the sinus floor sits too low

We see patients of all ages, and we accept patients without a referral for our surgical and periodontal services — so if you are in The Villages and simply want a straight answer about whether grafting is needed, you can come straight to us.

What the Process Looks Like

Your first visit is an exam and a conversation. We look at the site, review imaging, discuss what you want your final result to be, and explain whether a graft is necessary or optional. We would rather you understand the reasoning than simply be handed a plan.

The procedure itself is done with your comfort in mind. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation for patients who feel anxious about surgery. The area is numbed, the graft material is placed into the prepared site, and the gum tissue is closed over it. Many grafts take well under an hour. Afterward, the body does the real work — new bone grows into and replaces the graft material over a healing period of several months, after which we re-evaluate and move forward with the implant or restoration.

Healing and Follow-Up Care

Expect some swelling and tenderness for the first few days, managed with the instructions we send home with you. We will ask you to eat soft foods, avoid disturbing the surgical site, skip smoking, and keep the rest of your mouth clean. Short, specific instructions make a real difference in how well a graft takes.

We will see you back to check healing and, when the time comes, to plan the next phase. Because we have an on-site dental lab, much of the restorative work that follows — crowns, dentures, denture repairs — happens under our own roof, which keeps timelines tighter for patients driving in from The Villages.
