Teeth Whitening in Summerfield

You're getting ready for a wedding, a family reunion, or a round of photos you know will end up framed, and you notice your teeth don't look the way they did a decade ago. Coffee on the drive in, sweet tea in the Florida heat, a glass of red wine at dinner — it adds up slowly, and most people don't see it until they compare an old photo to a new one. Whitening is one of the simplest ways we help our Summerfield patients turn that around, and it's a conversation we have nearly every week.
Teeth whitening uses a professional-strength peroxide gel to lift stains that have settled into the outer layer of enamel and the dentin underneath. Everyday staining comes from foods, drinks, tobacco, and simple aging, and no amount of brushing removes it once it's absorbed below the surface. A cleaning polishes away what's sitting on top of the tooth; whitening works on what's already soaked in. That's the difference, and it's why so many people feel their teeth look dull even right after a hygiene visit.
We offer two approaches at our Ocala office, and Summerfield patients use both. In-office whitening is done here in the chair, with the gums protected and a stronger gel applied under supervision, so you see change in a single appointment. Take-home whitening uses custom trays made for your mouth and a gentler gel you wear over a series of days at your own pace. Some patients do in-office first for a jump start, then keep take-home trays on hand for touch-ups before holidays or events.
Most healthy adults are good candidates, but whitening isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, and that's exactly why we start with an exam rather than handing over a kit. Active decay, a cracked tooth, gum inflammation, or an old leaking filling should be addressed first — whitening gel reaching an untreated problem causes sensitivity and doesn't fix the underlying issue. Our general dentists, Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris, check for all of this before anything begins.
It also helps to know what whitening can't do. Crowns, bridges, veneers, and composite bonding don't lighten the way natural enamel does, so if you have restorations in the smile zone, we'll talk about how the final result will look together. Stains from certain medications or deep internal discoloration may respond only partially, in which case we may discuss cosmetic options such as porcelain or composite veneers. For patients already planning orthodontic treatment with clear aligners or Invisalign, we usually suggest finishing alignment first so the whole surface of each tooth is exposed.
What the Process Looks Like
An in-office visit begins with a quick assessment of your current shade, then isolation and protection of the gums and lips before the gel goes on in timed applications. You rest in the chair while it works. A take-home start is shorter: we take impressions or a scan, our on-site dental lab fabricates trays shaped to your teeth, and we walk you through how much gel to use, how long to wear the trays, and how to store everything.
- A pre-whitening exam and cleaning recommendation so staining is treated, not sealed in
- Shade matching before treatment so the change is measurable, not guesswork
- Custom-fitted trays from our in-house lab for take-home whitening
- Clear instructions on wear time, gel amount, and managing sensitivity
- A follow-up conversation about touch-ups and keeping results longer
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect, and it typically fades. We'll suggest a desensitizing toothpaste and adjusting wear time if it shows up. For the first couple of days afterward, teeth absorb color more readily, so we ask patients to go easy on coffee, tea, red wine, berries, tomato sauce, and tobacco. Long term, a straw for iced drinks, rinsing with water after staining foods, and keeping regular cleanings with our hygienist do more to protect your investment than anything else.
Convenient Care for Summerfield Families
We've cared for this part of Marion County for more than 30 years, and Summerfield patients make up a steady part of our schedule. Because we're a full general practice treating all ages, a whitening consult can be combined with a cleaning, exam, or any restorative work you've been putting off — fewer trips, one familiar team.
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay patients. Whitening is typically a cosmetic service, so we'll give you clear costs up front, and flexible payment plans are available if you'd rather spread it out. If you're considering a broader change, we also offer cosmetic smile-design consultations to map out what whitening alone will and won't accomplish for you.
