Wisdom Teeth Removal in Silver Springs

Most people first hear about their wisdom teeth during a routine exam, long before anything hurts. An X-ray shows two or four extra molars sitting at the back of the jaw, and the question becomes whether they have room to come in straight or whether they're going to cause trouble later. For our Silver Springs patients, that early conversation matters, because planning an extraction on your schedule is far easier than handling it as an emergency on a weekend.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars, and they usually try to erupt in the late teens or early twenties. Some people have enough jaw space and never need anything done. Many don't. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it stays partly or fully trapped under the gum or bone, angled against the molar in front of it. That pressure can damage the neighboring tooth, trap food and bacteria under a flap of gum, and create infections that keep coming back.
Removal takes the problem out before it spreads. A simple extraction is used when the tooth has erupted through the gum and can be lifted out whole. A surgical extraction is used when the tooth is impacted or hasn't fully come in, which involves a small incision and sometimes sectioning the tooth so it comes out in pieces through a smaller opening. Both are routine procedures here, and we handle them in the same office where you get your cleanings and exams, so there's no need to start over somewhere new. We accept patients without a referral for oral surgery.
You may be a candidate if your wisdom teeth are impacted, only partly erupted, crowding your other teeth, or causing pain, swelling, or repeated gum infections at the back of the mouth. Some patients come to us because food keeps packing behind the last molar and the area won't stay clean. Others are referred by a hygienist who sees decay starting on a tooth that's nearly impossible to brush.
We also see Silver Springs patients who have no symptoms at all but whose X-rays show teeth heading in the wrong direction. In those cases we talk honestly about timing rather than pushing a decision. Younger patients often have roots that aren't fully formed, which can make removal and healing more straightforward. Adults can absolutely have wisdom teeth removed too, and we treat all ages here, from children through seniors.
Common reasons patients choose removal include:
- Relief from recurring pain, pressure, or jaw stiffness at the back of the mouth
- Protection for the healthy second molar sitting next to an angled wisdom tooth
- Fewer gum infections and less food trapping in hard-to-clean areas
- Easier cleaning and better long-term oral hygiene
- Coordination with orthodontic care, including clear aligners and Invisalign, when space is a concern
What the Appointment Looks Like
We start with an exam and imaging to see the position of each tooth, the shape of the roots, and their relationship to surrounding structures. Then we review what we found with you — which teeth need to come out, whether each one is a simple or surgical extraction, and what to expect that day. You'll know the plan before anything is scheduled.
Comfort is part of the plan. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation for patients who feel anxious about dental surgery, in addition to local anesthetic. Because we also provide emergency dental appointments, Silver Springs patients dealing with sudden swelling or severe pain from a wisdom tooth don't have to wait weeks for relief. During the procedure itself, you shouldn't feel pain — pressure and movement are normal, discomfort is not, and we want to hear about it immediately if something changes.
Healing and Aftercare
The first 24 hours matter most. We send you home with written instructions covering gauze use, rest, and what to eat and avoid. Soft foods, no straws, no smoking, and no vigorous rinsing are the standard guidelines, because disturbing the healing site can lead to a painful dry socket. Swelling usually peaks in the first couple of days and then begins to settle.
Call us if bleeding doesn't slow, if pain worsens after day three, or if you develop a fever. We'd much rather check something early than have you wait it out. As a practice that has served Ocala and surrounding communities including Silver Springs for over 30 years, we're here for follow-up as long as you need it.
Insurance, Payment, and Scheduling
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file oral surgery claims as a General Practitioner. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans when treatment involves multiple extractions or additional procedures.
Before anything is scheduled, we'll go over your estimated costs and coverage so there are no surprises. If you're in Silver Springs and think your wisdom teeth need attention, contact us and we'll get you evaluated.
