Mouth Guards in Silver Springs

Mouth Guards in Silver Springs

A cracked molar from clenching and a chipped front tooth from a weekend ball game are two very different problems with one shared solution: a custom-fitted mouth guard. We make both kinds — night guards for grinding and clenching, and sports guards for athletes — for patients throughout Silver Springs, and we make them from impressions of your own teeth rather than handing you something generic off a shelf. That fit is the whole point. A guard that shifts, pinches, or makes it hard to breathe is a guard that stays in a drawer.

A night guard is a thin, custom appliance worn while you sleep. It separates your upper and lower teeth so the force of grinding, known as bruxism, lands on the guard instead of your enamel, crowns, or veneers. Many Silver Springs patients don't realize they grind at all — they come in for a routine exam and we notice flattened chewing surfaces, worn edges, small fracture lines, or gum recession in a pattern that points to clenching. Others arrive already aware of it, describing morning jaw soreness, tension headaches, or a partner who hears the grinding at night.

A sports guard is built differently. It's thicker and designed to absorb impact, cushioning the teeth, lips, and jaw during contact and collision activities. We fit these for children, teenagers, and adults, since we see patients of all ages. Football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, skateboarding, and martial arts all carry real risk to the front teeth, and a knocked-out or fractured tooth is a far more expensive, far more involved problem than a guard. Where a night guard quietly protects against repeated low-grade force over years, a sports guard protects against a single sudden blow. Patients who both grind and play sports typically need one of each, because neither design does the other job well.

  • Protection for dental work — crowns, bridges, veneers, bonding, and implant restorations all last longer when nightly grinding forces are absorbed by a guard
  • Relief from jaw strain — we treat TMJ disorders, jaw clicking and locking, jaw-related headaches, and chronic facial pain, and a night guard is often part of that care
  • Reduced enamel wear — once enamel is ground away it does not grow back, so prevention matters more than repair
  • Injury prevention for athletes — cushioning the teeth and jaw during play
  • Custom comfort — made from impressions of your own mouth, so it stays put and doesn't interfere with breathing or sleep

Good candidates include anyone showing wear patterns on their teeth, patients recovering from or planning extensive restorative work, people with ongoing jaw or facial pain, and every athlete in a contact sport. If your symptoms point to a broader temporomandibular joint issue, we can evaluate that directly rather than sending you elsewhere — we accept patients without a referral for orofacial pain concerns.

How We Make Your Guard

The process starts with an exam. We look at how your teeth meet, check for wear facets and fractures, and ask about headaches, jaw movement, and sleep. For athletes we also talk about the sport, position, and whether braces or aligners are involved, since that changes the design.

Next we take impressions or a scan of your teeth. From there, our on-site dental lab does the fabrication — the same lab that lets us produce same-day crowns, dentures, and denture repairs. Keeping the work in-house means fewer delays and easier adjustments, which matters when a Silver Springs patient has a season starting or a cracked tooth that needs protecting now. At delivery we check the fit, confirm your bite is even across the guard, and adjust any spot that feels high or tight. Small refinements at this stage make the difference between a guard you wear and one you abandon.

Caring for It and Making It Last

Rinse your guard with cool water after each use and brush it gently — hot water can warp the material. Let it dry fully before storing it in a ventilated case, never loose in a gym bag. Bring it to your cleanings and exams so we can inspect it for thinning, cracks, or changes in fit. Guards wear out; heavy grinders go through them faster, and growing children outgrow sports guards as new teeth come in.

Insurance, Payment, and Getting Started

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay and cash patients. For treatment that extends beyond a single guard, we offer flexible payment plans, and our team will go over your coverage and costs before you commit.

Ocala Dental Care has served this area for more than 30 years, and Silver Springs patients are a regular part of our practice. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris see all ages, and we also offer emergency appointments if a tooth is damaged before a guard is in place.
