Gingivectomy in Silver Springs

Gingivectomy in Silver Springs

A gingivectomy removes excess or diseased gum tissue so the teeth underneath can be cleaned, restored, and seen properly. For some of our Silver Springs patients, that means finally getting rid of deep pockets where bacteria hide after gum disease has taken hold. For others, it means reshaping a gum line that covers too much tooth and makes a smile look short or uneven. Either way, the goal is the same: healthier tissue that is easier to maintain and a gum line that fits the teeth it surrounds.

Gum tissue can overgrow or detach from the tooth for several reasons. Chronic inflammation from plaque and tartar buildup causes gums to swell and pull away, creating pockets that a toothbrush and floss simply cannot reach. Certain medications are also known to cause gum overgrowth. And in some mouths, the gums never receded naturally during development, leaving teeth that look stubby even though they are a normal length.

During a gingivectomy, we carefully trim away the excess or unhealthy tissue and contour what remains so it follows the natural curve of each tooth. When the procedure is done for health reasons, the result is a shallower, cleanable space around the tooth. When it is done for appearance, the result is a more balanced gum line. We also use gingivectomy to expose enough tooth structure for a filling or crown when decay extends below the gum. Our on-site dental lab means that when a crown follows the procedure, we can often handle the restoration here rather than sending the case out.

Most people considering this procedure fall into one of a few groups. You may have been told you have gum pockets that did not fully respond to scaling and root planing. You may have gums that bleed easily, feel puffy, or look red along the margins. You may dislike how much gum shows when you smile, or notice that one or two teeth look shorter than the ones beside them. Or you may need a tooth prepared for restorative work that decay has made difficult to access.

We see patients of all ages, and we accept new patients without a referral, so Silver Springs residents do not need to go through another office first to be evaluated here. We start with an exam and a conversation about what is bothering you. In some cases a thorough cleaning or scaling and root planing resolves the inflammation on its own, and surgery is not needed. If we do recommend a gingivectomy, we explain why, what it will involve, and what the alternative options are before anything is scheduled.

What the Procedure and Recovery Involve

The appointment itself is usually straightforward. We numb the area thoroughly, then remove and shape the targeted tissue. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation for patients who feel anxious about dental work, and we also provide laser dentistry as part of our care. Treatment time depends on how many teeth are involved — a single tooth being prepared for a crown is a much shorter visit than reshaping an entire arch.

Here is what Silver Springs patients can generally expect around the procedure:

  • A full evaluation first, including exam and discussion of your gum health history
  • Local anesthetic, with sedation options available if you want them
  • Mild tenderness for a few days afterward, managed with the instructions we provide
  • A soft-food period and specific guidance on brushing around the treated area
  • A follow-up visit so we can check healing and confirm the tissue is settling as expected

Aftercare matters as much as the procedure. Gum tissue that was removed because of disease can become inflamed again if plaque builds back up, so we talk through home care and set you up with periodontal maintenance visits at the interval that fits your situation. Our hygienist is part of that long-term plan.

Scheduling, Insurance, and Payment for Silver Springs Patients

We have cared for Marion County families from our Ocala office for more than 30 years, and Silver Springs is one of the communities we regularly serve. Being close to home matters for a procedure with a follow-up visit attached, and it matters even more if something unexpected comes up — we offer emergency dental appointments for established and new patients alike.

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans so the cost can be spread out rather than paid all at once. Before treatment begins, we go over what your plan is likely to cover and what your portion would be, so there are no surprises. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris are glad to answer your questions at a consultation — call our office to arrange a time.
