Extraction in Silver Springs

Extraction in Silver Springs

A tooth that aches at night, a wisdom tooth pressing against its neighbor, or a molar that cracked on something hard — these are the kinds of problems that bring our Silver Springs patients in, often on short notice. Removing a tooth is never our first choice; when a tooth can be saved with a filling, crown, or root canal, we say so. But when a tooth is beyond repair or is actively harming the teeth and bone around it, a well-planned extraction ends the pain, stops the damage from spreading, and clears the way for a healthy replacement. We've cared for families across Marion County for more than 30 years, and we see patients of all ages without requiring a referral.

An extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. We perform two types, and which one you need depends on the tooth's condition and position — not on how "bad" your situation is.

A simple extraction is used when the tooth is fully erupted and visible above the gumline, with enough solid structure to grip. After numbing the area, we gently loosen the tooth within its socket and lift it out. These appointments are usually brief and comfortable, and they're common for teeth weakened by deep decay, advanced gum disease, or a fracture that can't be restored.

A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth isn't accessible from above — it may be impacted beneath the gum, only partly erupted, broken off at the gumline, or anchored by curved roots. Here we make a small opening in the gum tissue, and sometimes remove a bit of bone or divide the tooth into sections so each piece can be lifted out through a smaller space. Impacted wisdom teeth are the most familiar example. Sectioning a tooth sounds dramatic, but it is often the gentlest route, because it protects surrounding bone and neighboring teeth.

Your first visit begins with an exam and images so we can see the roots, the surrounding bone, and nearby nerves and sinuses. We review your medical history and medications, then explain what we see and what your options are. If a root canal, crown, or gum treatment could save the tooth, we'll walk you through that path first — we provide those services here as well.

When extraction is the right call, we plan the replacement at the same time. Depending on your goals, that may mean a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial or complete denture. In some cases we recommend bone grafting at the time of removal to preserve the ridge for a future implant. Having an on-site dental lab means prosthetic work and repairs are handled in-house, which is a real convenience for Silver Springs patients who'd rather not make extra trips.

Reasons we may recommend removal include:

  • Decay or fracture too extensive for a filling, crown, or root canal
  • Impacted or crowded wisdom teeth causing pain, swelling, or pressure
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened a tooth beyond saving
  • Teeth that interfere with orthodontic treatment or a planned denture or implant
  • Traumatic injury that has left a tooth unsalvageable

The Appointment and Your Recovery

We thoroughly numb the area before beginning, and for patients who feel anxious we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation. You'll feel pressure and movement, not sharpness. Simple extractions often take only a few minutes per tooth; surgical cases take longer and may include a few stitches. We'll tell you beforehand which to expect.

Aftercare is straightforward. You'll bite on gauze to form a clot, rest for the remainder of the day, and avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing so the clot stays in place. Cold compresses help with swelling, and soft foods are easiest for the first couple of days. Surgical sites generally take a bit longer to settle than simple ones. We send you home with written instructions and a number to call — and because we keep time open for emergency dental appointments, you're never left waiting if something feels off.
