Sedation Dentistry in Oxford

Dental anxiety doesn't always look like fear. For some of our Oxford patients, it's a strong gag reflex that makes impressions difficult. For others, it's a jaw that aches after twenty minutes of treatment, a history of injections that didn't feel like they worked, or simply the knowledge that several procedures have been put off for years and now need to happen in one visit. Sedation dentistry gives us a way to address all of those situations, and we offer two options at our Ocala office: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative you breathe in through a small mask over your nose. It takes effect within minutes, keeps you fully awake and able to respond to us, and wears off almost as quickly once we switch you back to oxygen. Because it leaves your system so fast, most people can drive themselves home afterward and return to work or errands the same day. We find it's a good fit for patients who feel uneasy rather than truly fearful — someone getting a filling, a cleaning after a long gap, or a child who needs sealants and does better with a little help staying calm.
Oral sedation is medication taken by mouth before your appointment. It produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide, and many patients remember very little of the visit afterward. You remain conscious and able to respond, but the sense of time passing changes, which makes longer or more involved appointments far easier to get through. Oral sedation requires a responsible adult to drive you to and from our office, and you'll need to take the rest of the day easy. When we're comparing the two with an Oxford patient, the questions usually come down to how much anxiety you carry, how long the appointment will run, and whether you have a ride available.
Sedation isn't only for anxiety, though that's the most common reason patients ask about it. We also use it to make treatment more comfortable for people with physical or practical obstacles that have nothing to do with fear.
- Patients who have avoided the dentist long enough that they need several procedures combined into fewer, longer visits
- Anyone with a sensitive gag reflex that interferes with X-rays, impressions, or work on back teeth
- Patients having wisdom teeth removed, surgical extractions, bone grafting, or implant placement
- People who struggle to sit still or keep their mouth open comfortably for extended periods
- Patients with TMJ pain or jaw tension that makes longer appointments difficult
- Anyone who has had a bad dental experience in the past and wants a different one this time
Because we handle general, restorative, surgical, periodontal, and endodontic care under one roof, sedation can be paired with a wide range of treatment — root canals, scaling and root planing, gum grafting, full arch implant work, or a full mouth reconstruction. Our on-site dental lab also means crowns, dentures, and denture repairs can often be completed the same day, so a sedated visit can accomplish more than it otherwise would.
What the Process Looks Like
We start with a conversation and an exam. We'll review your medical history, current medications, and past experiences with dental treatment, then recommend the option that fits. If nitrous oxide is the plan, there's nothing to do in advance — we place the mask when you're settled in the chair and adjust the level throughout. If oral sedation is the plan, we'll give you specific instructions about when to take the medication, what to eat beforehand, and arranging your transportation.
During treatment, we monitor how you're doing and check in regularly. Local anesthetic is still used so the treatment area is numb; sedation addresses your comfort and awareness, not the numbing itself. Afterward, nitrous oxide patients typically feel normal within minutes. Oral sedation patients rest with us until we're satisfied they're ready to leave with their driver, then spend the remainder of the day resting at home. Any post-treatment instructions specific to your procedure — diet, rinsing, medication — are reviewed with you and your companion, and we're available if questions come up.
Scheduling and Payment for Oxford Patients
Oxford families have been part of our practice for years, and the drive to Ocala is a reasonable one for care that can be consolidated into fewer appointments. If you're coming from Oxford for a longer sedation visit, we'll help you plan the timing around your driver's schedule.
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay and cash patients. Flexible payment plans are available when treatment is extensive. We also keep room for emergency appointments, including same-day availability, so an urgent problem doesn't have to wait. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris see patients of all ages, and no referral is needed — call us to talk through your options.
