Dentures in Oxford

A cracked denture on a Sunday, a lower partial that no longer clips in place, or a set of teeth that have slowly become too loose to chew comfortably — these are the moments that bring many of our Oxford neighbors in to see us. Dentures solve a very practical problem: replacing missing teeth so you can eat, speak, and smile without thinking about it. Because we keep a dental lab on site, much of that work happens in our own building rather than being shipped out and waited on, which matters when you're driving in from Oxford and would rather not make five separate trips.
A denture is a removable appliance that replaces missing teeth and the gum tissue around them. There are two broad types, and the right one depends entirely on how many natural teeth you still have.
Complete dentures replace a full arch — all the upper teeth, all the lower teeth, or both. They rest directly on the gums and are shaped to fit the contours of your mouth. These suit patients who have already lost their remaining teeth, or whose teeth are failing because of advanced decay or gum disease and need to be removed. Partial dentures are for patients who still have healthy natural teeth. A partial fills the gaps and attaches to the remaining teeth for support, which also keeps those teeth from drifting into the empty spaces over time.
Comparing the two simply: if you have natural teeth worth keeping, a partial is almost always the better path, because preserving your own teeth preserves bone and bite stability. If the remaining teeth can't be saved, a complete denture restores the whole arch at once. We also offer implant-supported dentures and snap-in dentures for patients who want a more secure fit, and full-arch implant options including All-on-4. We'll walk you through which of these is realistic for your mouth and your budget before anything begins.
The process starts with an exam, including X-rays, so we can see the condition of your remaining teeth, gums, and jawbone. If extractions are needed, we handle simple and surgical extractions here, and we can discuss bone grafting if an implant-supported option interests you later.
From there we take impressions and detailed measurements of your bite. Our lab uses these to build your denture, and we check fit, bite, and appearance along the way — you'll see how the teeth look before everything is finalized. Shade, shape, and tooth position are all adjustable, and for patients who want a more deliberate approach to appearance, we offer cosmetic smile-design consultations. Once the finished denture is delivered, small adjustments are normal in the first weeks as your gums settle. We expect them and we'd rather you come in than tolerate a sore spot.
Here's what Oxford patients can generally expect from denture treatment with us:
- A clear explanation of complete, partial, and implant-supported options before you commit
- Impressions and bite records taken in-office, with lab work done on site
- Extractions, when needed, performed in the same practice rather than referred elsewhere
- Follow-up adjustment visits to relieve pressure points and fine-tune the bite
- Repairs and relines for existing dentures, including ones made somewhere else
- Nitrous oxide or oral sedation available if dental visits make you anxious
Living With Your Dentures
Dentures ask a little patience at first. Speech usually normalizes within days as your tongue adapts. Eating takes longer — start with softer foods cut small, chew on both sides at once to keep the denture stable, and work back toward a normal diet gradually.
Daily care is straightforward: rinse after meals, brush the denture with a soft brush and a non-abrasive cleaner, and soak it overnight so it stays moist and keeps its shape. Clean your gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth too — partial denture wearers especially need to protect the supporting teeth, since those anchor the whole appliance. Keep up with regular exams and cleanings with our hygienist. Gums and bone change shape over the years, so a denture that fit perfectly at delivery may eventually need a reline or remake, and we also perform oral cancer screenings at those checkups.
