Oral Cancer Screening in McIntosh

Oral Cancer Screening in McIntosh

Maybe you noticed a sore inside your cheek that hasn't healed in a few weeks, or a rough patch on the side of your tongue that you keep touching with your toothbrush. Maybe nothing feels wrong at all, and you simply want to know that everything looks healthy. Either way, an oral cancer screening is one of the quietest, quickest parts of a dental visit — and one of the most worthwhile. For our patients in McIntosh, it's a few extra minutes that fold neatly into a routine exam and cleaning.

An oral cancer screening is a careful visual and physical examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, head, and neck. We look at your lips, the inside of your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth, your gums, and all surfaces of your tongue, including the sides and underside where changes are easy to miss on your own. We also gently feel along your jaw, under your chin, and down the sides of your neck, checking for lumps, firmness, or swelling in the lymph nodes.

What we're watching for are things like white or red patches, sores that haven't healed, thickened or hardened areas, unexplained bleeding, numbness, or persistent hoarseness and difficulty swallowing. Most of what we find turns out to be something ordinary — a cheek bite, an irritation from a denture edge, or a canker sore. But because early tissue changes rarely hurt, they're usually found by someone looking for them rather than by the patient. That's the entire point of screening: catching a change while it's still small and while you still have every option in front of you.

Screening is appropriate for essentially every adult patient, and we include it as part of the comprehensive dental exam at our office. Some people have added reason to keep up with it consistently. Tobacco use in any form, heavy alcohol use, significant sun exposure to the lips, a history of HPV, and simply getting older all raise the level of attention we pay. So does a personal or family history of oral cancer.

McIntosh patients often come to us because they want general, restorative, and cosmetic care in one place rather than bouncing between offices. We've practiced in Ocala for over 30 years, we see all ages, and we welcome patients without a referral across our general, periodontal, endodontic, oral surgery, prosthodontic, orthodontic, and orofacial pain services. That continuity matters for screening: when the same team looks at your mouth visit after visit, we notice what's new.

  • A screening is painless, requires no needles or numbing, and typically takes only a few minutes
  • It pairs naturally with your dental cleaning and exam, so there's no separate trip from McIntosh
  • We examine soft tissue, jaw, and neck, not just teeth and gums
  • Findings are explained to you in plain language before you leave
  • If something needs a closer look, we can perform an oral biopsy in our own office

What Happens During and After the Visit

We start by asking a few questions — any sores, numbness, hoarseness, lumps, or changes in how your bite or dentures feel. Then we examine the tissues directly, using gauze to gently hold and move your tongue so we can see every surface. If you wear complete or partial dentures, we'll ask you to remove them so we can inspect the tissue underneath, which is a common site for irritation.

Afterward, there's no recovery and no restrictions. You go right back to your day. If everything looks normal, we simply note it and re-screen at your next visit. If we see an area worth watching, we often recommend a short follow-up in two to three weeks, since many irritations resolve on their own once the cause is removed. If an area persists or looks concerning, we'll discuss an oral biopsy — taking a small tissue sample for laboratory evaluation — so you get a definitive answer rather than a guess. At home, the best aftercare is ongoing awareness: check your lips, cheeks, and tongue in the mirror now and then, and call us about anything that lingers beyond two weeks.

Scheduling, Insurance, and Payment

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practitioner, which keeps paperwork straightforward. Screening is generally performed as part of your exam, so for most McIntosh patients it fits within the preventive care their plan already covers. We'll verify your benefits and tell you what to expect ahead of time.

We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans if follow-up treatment is recommended. For urgent concerns, we keep emergency appointments available, and our on-site dental lab lets us handle many restorative needs — including same-day crowns and denture repairs — without extra trips. Call our office to schedule with Dr. Hussein Salifu or Dr. Marco Geris.
