Sedation Dentistry in Marion Oaks

If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your stomach tighten, you are far from alone. Many of the Marion Oaks patients we care for have put off a cleaning, a filling, or a long-overdue extraction for years — not because they don't want a healthy smile, but because past experiences, a sensitive gag reflex, or simple nerves made the appointment feel impossible. Sedation dentistry exists for exactly that reason. At Ocala Dental Care, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation so that the care you need feels manageable, calm, and far shorter than you expected.
Sedation dentistry means using medication to help you feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment. It is not a separate procedure — it is a layer of comfort added to the dentistry you were already planning, whether that's a dental cleaning, a root canal, wisdom teeth removal, gum grafting, or a longer restorative visit such as crowns or implant work.
We offer two options. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is breathed in through a small mask over your nose. It takes effect within minutes, leaves you awake and able to respond, and wears off quickly once the mask comes off — which usually means you can drive yourself home and return to your day. It suits patients with mild to moderate nervousness, children who need a little help holding still, and anyone with a strong gag reflex.
Oral sedation is medication taken by mouth before your appointment. It produces a deeper sense of calm, and many patients remember very little of the visit afterward. Because the effects linger, you'll need a responsible adult to drive you to and from our office. Oral sedation tends to be the better fit for significant dental anxiety, for patients who struggle with numbness alone, and for longer or combined appointments — for example, several extractions, implant placement, or a full mouth reconstruction phase handled in one sitting rather than spread across many visits.
Marion Oaks residents often travel out of the community for dental care, and we've built our practice so that one trip accomplishes more. We've served Marion County from our Ocala office for over 30 years, treating patients of all ages — adults and children alike — under one roof.
Our on-site dental lab is a meaningful part of that convenience. Same-day crowns, dentures, and denture repairs mean fewer return trips, which matters a great deal when sedation is involved and you've arranged a ride. We also handle endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, orofacial pain, and prosthodontics in-house, and we accept patients without a referral — so there's no second office, no second intake, and no waiting weeks to be seen. We offer emergency and same-day emergency appointments as well, including for traumatic dental injuries and cracked teeth.
Who Is a Good Candidate, and What the Visit Looks Like
Sedation can be appropriate if you recognize yourself in any of these situations:
- Dental anxiety or fear that has caused you to delay or cancel appointments
- A sensitive gag reflex that makes impressions, X-rays, or back-teeth work difficult
- Difficulty getting fully numb with local anesthetic alone
- Lengthy procedures such as implants, full arch treatment, or multiple extractions
- Trouble sitting still or keeping the mouth open comfortably for extended periods
- Jaw conditions, including TMJ disorders, that make longer appointments uncomfortable
Before any sedation, we review your health history, current medications, and past experiences with dental treatment. That conversation determines which option fits — and whether sedation is advisable at all. On the day of your visit, we'll confirm instructions, get you settled, and monitor you throughout. With nitrous oxide, we begin the gas, let it take effect, and adjust it as we work. With oral sedation, you'll take the medication as directed and arrive already relaxed.
Afterward, nitrous patients typically feel normal within a short time of the mask being removed. Oral sedation patients should plan a quiet day at home, eat lightly, follow any post-procedure instructions for the dentistry performed, and have someone available to help. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris will go over recovery specifics with you and whoever accompanies you.
Insurance, Payment, and Taking the First Step
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a General Practitioner across our service areas. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans so that cost doesn't keep necessary treatment on hold.
If you live in Marion Oaks and have been avoiding the dentist, tell us that when you call. We'll discuss which form of sedation suits you, what your treatment will involve, and how to make the visit work for your schedule and budget.
