Wisdom Teeth Removal in Ocala

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Ocala

That ache at the very back of your jaw — the kind that makes it hard to chew on one side, or that flares up every few months and then quiets down — is one of the most common reasons people call us. Wisdom teeth, the third molars that usually arrive between the late teens and mid-twenties, often don't have room to come in straight. When they push against neighboring molars, stay trapped under the gum, or erupt only partway, they can cause pain, swelling, and infection. We remove wisdom teeth here in our Ocala office for teenagers, college students home on break, and adults who have lived with a problem tooth for years.

Wisdom teeth removal is the extraction of one or more third molars, either through a simple extraction when the tooth has fully erupted and can be lifted out, or a surgical extraction when the tooth is impacted beneath bone or gum tissue and needs to be accessed and sectioned for removal. We perform both, and we also handle the bone grafting that is sometimes recommended when a socket needs extra support for future treatment.

Not every wisdom tooth has to go. Some come in straight, fully erupt, and can be cleaned well enough to stay. The deciding factors are position, available space, and whether the tooth is already causing trouble. We evaluate each one individually rather than assuming all four need to come out.

Reasons Ocala Patients Come to Us for Wisdom Teeth

The most common situation is the partially erupted tooth. When only part of the crown breaks through, a flap of gum tissue covers the rest, and food and bacteria collect underneath where no toothbrush reaches. That leads to repeated swelling and soreness that comes and goes. Removal solves the problem permanently.

The second situation is crowding and damage to the tooth next door. An angled wisdom tooth presses into the second molar, and that pressure can create decay or damage on a tooth that was otherwise healthy. Patients finishing orthodontic treatment often ask about this as well — we treat both children and adults with clear aligners and Invisalign, and wisdom teeth sometimes factor into that conversation.

The third situation is urgent. A wisdom tooth that becomes infected does not wait for a convenient appointment. We offer emergency dental appointments, including same-day emergency visits, so Ocala patients dealing with sudden swelling or severe pain have somewhere to go.

Common reasons we recommend removal include:

  • Impaction, where the tooth is trapped under bone or gum and cannot erupt
  • Repeated gum infection or swelling around a partially erupted tooth
  • Pressure or decay affecting the adjacent second molar
  • Pain, jaw stiffness, or difficulty opening and chewing comfortably
  • Difficulty keeping the area clean, leading to ongoing decay risk

What the Appointment Involves

We start with an exam and imaging to see exactly where each tooth sits, how the roots are shaped, and how close they are to nearby structures. That determines whether the extraction is simple or surgical and how long to plan for. We go over the findings with you before anything is scheduled, including which teeth we recommend removing and why.

On the day of treatment, the area is fully numbed. For patients who feel anxious about the procedure, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation dentistry — many people are more comfortable with one of these, and we will discuss which option fits you. A surgical extraction may involve a small incision and sutures; a simple extraction usually does not.

Recovery takes a few days for most people. We send you home with written aftercare instructions covering gauze use, cold compresses, soft foods, and the importance of not using straws or smoking while the socket heals, since suction can dislodge the clot. Rest for the first day, keep the area clean as directed, and call us if bleeding, swelling, or pain worsens instead of improving. We would rather hear from you early.

Scheduling, Insurance, and Payment

Our Ocala office has served this community for more than thirty years, and we see patients of all ages, from children through adults. Because we handle extractions in-house as part of our general and oral surgery care, you do not need a referral to be seen, and your records stay in one place if you later need an implant, bridge, or other restoration in the same area.

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file oral surgery claims as a general practice. Self-pay and cash patients are welcome, and we offer flexible payment plans so cost does not delay treatment that is already overdue. Call our Ocala office to schedule an evaluation, and we will give you a clear picture of what your treatment involves and what it will cost before you commit to anything.
