Extraction in Ocala

Extraction in Ocala

A tooth that cracks below the gumline, a wisdom tooth pressing sideways into its neighbor, a molar weakened by decay past the point where a filling or crown can hold — these are the moments when removing a tooth becomes the healthiest path forward. In our Ocala office, we approach every extraction the same way: confirm it's genuinely necessary, explain exactly what will happen, keep you comfortable throughout, and plan for what comes next so the space doesn't create new problems down the road.

An extraction is the complete removal of a tooth from its socket. We perform two kinds, and the difference comes down to how the tooth is positioned and how much of it is accessible above the gumline.

A simple extraction applies when the tooth is fully erupted and can be gripped with instruments. After numbing the area, we gently loosen the tooth within its socket and lift it out. These appointments are often shorter than patients expect. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is impacted, broken at or below the gumline, or has roots that curve in a way that prevents straightforward removal. Here we make a small opening in the gum tissue, and sometimes divide the tooth into sections so each piece can be removed through a smaller space — an approach that's frequently gentler on surrounding bone than forcing a single large root out intact.

Wisdom teeth are a common reason Ocala patients need the surgical approach, since third molars often come in angled or never fully erupt. We also handle oral surgery claims in-house and accept patients without a referral, so you don't need to be sent elsewhere to start.

You may be a candidate if you have severe decay that can't be restored, a tooth fractured beyond repair, advanced gum disease that has loosened a tooth's support, crowding that's interfering with orthodontic plans, or wisdom teeth causing pain or pressure. We also see patients whose tooth has already been treated with a root canal but has since failed structurally.

Our evaluation starts with imaging and an exam so we can see root shape, bone levels, and the position of nearby structures. Because we offer root canal therapy, crowns, and other restorative options, we'll tell you honestly when a tooth can be saved instead. When removal truly is the right call, we move directly into planning replacement — implants, bridges, or dentures — and bone grafting or a sinus lift when the site needs added support for a future implant.

What to Expect Before, During, and After

Most extractions happen under local anesthetic. For patients who feel anxious or who need a longer surgical visit, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation. Tell us ahead of time if you're nervous — it changes how we plan the appointment.

  • A review of your medical history and current medications before we begin
  • Full numbing of the area, with time to confirm you feel nothing sharp before we start
  • Steady pressure rather than pain during the removal itself
  • Placement of gauze and clear instructions for controlling bleeding
  • Stitches when a surgical approach was used, plus guidance on whether they dissolve
  • A conversation about replacing the tooth, so the plan is set before you leave

Aftercare matters as much as the procedure. For the first day, bite on gauze as directed, avoid rinsing forcefully, skip straws and smoking, and keep to soft, cool foods. A blood clot needs to stay in the socket for healing to proceed normally, and suction or vigorous rinsing can dislodge it. Swelling is common after surgical extractions and usually responds to a cold compress. If you have unexpected pain, prolonged bleeding, or anything that worries you, call us — we keep room for emergency appointments.

Care Built Around Ocala Patients

We've been practicing in Ocala for more than thirty years, and we treat patients of all ages, from children needing space maintainers after an early tooth loss to adults planning full arch implants. Families from Belleview, Silver Springs, Summerfield, Marion Oaks, and The Villages come to us as well, often because they'd rather handle extraction and replacement under one roof than coordinate between offices.

Our on-site dental lab is a real advantage here. Same-day crowns, dentures, and denture repairs mean less waiting between appointments when an extraction is part of a larger restorative plan. We're members of the FDA and the Central Florida District Dental Association, and Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris see patients throughout the week.

Insurance, Self-Pay, and Payment Plans

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file oral surgery claims as a general practitioner. Before treatment, our team will walk through your coverage so you understand what's billed and what's yours.

Self-pay and cash patients are welcome, and we offer flexible payment plans. If cost is the reason you've been putting off an extraction, say so at your consultation — we'd rather build a workable plan than watch a problem tooth get worse.
