Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ/TMD) Therapy in Summerfield

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ/TMD) Therapy in Summerfield

You wake up with a dull ache along your jaw, your morning coffee feels like work because chewing hurts, and by mid-afternoon a headache has settled in behind your temples. Maybe your jaw clicks when you open wide, or it catches for a second before it releases. For a lot of our Summerfield patients, that pattern goes on for months before anyone connects it to the temporomandibular joint. We treat TMJ disorders as part of our orofacial pain care, and we see patients without a referral, so you can call us directly and get the conversation started.

The temporomandibular joints are the hinges that connect your lower jaw to your skull, one on each side. They handle every bite, word, and yawn, and they rely on muscles, ligaments, and a small cushioning disc working together. When something in that system is irritated or out of balance, the result is TMD — temporomandibular joint disorder — and it can show up as jaw pain, clicking or popping, limited opening, locking, facial soreness, or headaches that seem to start near the jaw and spread.

TMJ/TMD therapy is the process of identifying what is driving those symptoms and addressing it without guesswork. It is not a single procedure. For one patient, the main factor may be nighttime clenching and grinding. For another, it may be a bite that does not come together evenly, a cracked tooth changing how they chew, or an old dental injury. We evaluate jaw-related headaches, jaw clicking, locking, and limited movement, and we treat chronic facial pain, so the evaluation looks at the whole picture rather than one tooth.

Most people who come to us from Summerfield are not sure whether their symptoms "count." They do. You are a reasonable candidate for an evaluation if any of the following sounds familiar:

  • Jaw pain or tightness that is worse in the morning or after a long day
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when you open or close
  • Your jaw locks open or closed, or you cannot open as wide as you used to
  • Frequent headaches centered near the temples, or aching in the cheeks and ears
  • Worn, chipped, or sensitive teeth that suggest clenching and grinding
  • Facial pain that has lasted weeks or months without a clear cause

We see patients of all ages, adults and children alike, and jaw symptoms are not limited to any one age group. Teenagers under stress clench. Adults with long commutes and demanding jobs clench. Older patients may notice changes after tooth loss or when a denture no longer fits the way it once did. If you are already coming to us for cleanings, implants, or restorative work, we can fold a jaw evaluation into your care rather than sending you somewhere else.

What Your First Visit and Treatment Look Like

The first appointment is an exam and a conversation. We check how far your jaw opens, listen and feel for clicking or deviation as you move, palpate the jaw and facial muscles for tenderness, and look at how your teeth meet. We ask when symptoms started, what makes them worse, and whether you grind at night. We also check for cracked teeth and other dental problems that can masquerade as, or contribute to, jaw pain — something we are set up to diagnose and treat here.

From there, treatment is matched to what we find. A custom night guard is one of the most common starting points, protecting teeth from grinding and easing the load on the joints and muscles. Because we have an on-site dental lab, appliances and restorations are made here rather than shipped out, which keeps turnaround short and adjustments simple. When the bite itself is part of the problem, restorative work such as crowns or onlays, or orthodontic treatment with clear aligners, may be part of the plan. We will explain what we recommend and why before anything begins.

Aftercare, Follow-Up, and Paying for Treatment

TMD care is usually managed over time rather than finished in one visit. If you receive a night guard, we check the fit, adjust it as needed, and make sure it stays comfortable. We may also review habits that aggravate the joint — chewing gum, biting nails, resting your chin on your hand, sleeping position — along with gentle home measures and a softer diet during flare-ups. If symptoms change, we want to hear about it so we can adjust rather than wait.

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice, and we welcome self-pay patients. Flexible payment plans are available when treatment needs to be spread out. Our team has cared for this part of Central Florida for more than 30 years, and Summerfield patients are a regular part of our day — including those who need emergency appointments when a jaw locks or a tooth gives out unexpectedly.
