Sinus Lift Surgery in Oxford

Sinus Lift Surgery in Oxford

If you've been told you don't have enough bone in your upper jaw to support a dental implant, you're not at a dead end. That message surprises many of our Oxford patients, especially those who lost an upper molar years ago and assumed the space would simply stay as it was. In the back of the upper jaw, the sinus cavity sits directly above the tooth roots, and once a tooth is gone, that bone tends to thin while the sinus expands downward. Sinus lift surgery rebuilds that foundation so an implant has solid bone to anchor into — and it's one of the procedures we provide here at Ocala Dental Care for patients throughout Oxford and the surrounding Marion and Sumter County communities.

A sinus lift, sometimes called sinus augmentation, is a bone grafting procedure performed in the upper back jaw. The thin membrane lining the floor of the maxillary sinus is gently lifted upward, and bone grafting material is placed in the space created underneath. Over the following months, your body integrates that graft material, building a thicker, denser ridge of bone where an implant can be placed securely.

The need for this procedure comes down to simple anatomy. Upper molars and premolars have roots that reach close to the sinus floor, and in some people that floor naturally sits low to begin with. Add years of bone loss after an extraction, or bone thinning from advanced gum disease, and there may only be a few millimeters of usable bone left — not enough to hold an implant steady. Rather than ruling out implants, a sinus lift creates the conditions that make them possible. For Oxford patients who have been wearing a partial denture or living with an open space in the upper arch, this often becomes the turning point in a longer treatment plan.

Candidacy starts with imaging and an honest conversation. We evaluate the height and quality of bone in the upper jaw, the position of the sinus, the health of your gums, and your overall goals for tooth replacement. Some patients need a sinus lift before a single implant; others are planning a larger restoration such as implant-supported bridges, full arch implants, or implant-supported dentures, where upper back bone volume matters a great deal.

We also look at whether gum disease needs to be treated first, since healthy supporting tissue is part of a stable long-term result. Because we handle periodontal care, oral surgery, and implant restoration in one office — with an on-site dental lab for crowns, bridges, and dentures — Oxford patients aren't shuttled between separate practices to finish one treatment plan. We also accept patients without a referral, so you can call us directly to begin.

Situations where a sinus lift is commonly considered include:

  • An upper molar or premolar lost years ago, with noticeable bone thinning since
  • A naturally low sinus floor that limits implant placement
  • Bone loss following advanced gum disease
  • Planning for full arch or full mouth dental implants in the upper jaw
  • A long-standing upper partial denture that you'd like to replace with implants

What the Procedure and Recovery Involve

On the day of surgery, the area is thoroughly numbed, and we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation for patients who feel anxious about oral surgery. A small access point is made in the bone, the sinus membrane is carefully elevated, graft material is placed, and the site is closed with sutures. Many patients are surprised by how straightforward the appointment feels once it's underway.

Aftercare matters as much as the surgery itself. You'll be asked to avoid blowing your nose forcefully, avoid smoking, skip strenuous activity for a short period, and stick to softer foods while the site settles. Mild swelling or minor nasal discharge can occur early on. We'll review medication instructions, how to clean around the area, and what warning signs to call about — and because we also keep time available for emergency dental appointments, Oxford patients know there's a number to call if something feels off. Once the graft has matured, we move forward with implant placement.

Insurance, Payment, and Getting Started from Oxford

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice, and we welcome self-pay and cash patients. For treatment plans that span several stages, we offer flexible payment plans so the cost can be spread out rather than paid all at once. We'll go over what your coverage is likely to address before anything begins.

Ocala Dental Care has served this area for more than 30 years, and Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris treat patients of all ages. If an implant in your upper jaw has been described as not possible, we'd welcome the chance to take a closer look and explain your options clearly.
