Why choose us

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Cavity Protection

Sealants shield the deep grooves of back teeth where decay most often starts.

Quick And Comfortable

Placing a sealant takes only minutes and requires no drilling or numbing.

Great For Families

We care for all ages, so children and adults can both benefit from sealants.

Less Dental Work Later

Preventing decay now helps you avoid fillings and more involved treatment down the road.

Budget Friendly Options

We accept all major PPO plans, self-pay patients, and offer flexible payment plans.

The chewing surfaces of back teeth are not smooth. They are covered in narrow grooves and pits that trap food and bacteria, and those grooves are often deeper than a toothbrush bristle can reach. That is why most cavities in children and teenagers start on molars, even when brushing habits are good. A dental sealant is a thin protective coating painted into those grooves to seal them off, and it is one of the simplest preventive steps we offer at our Ocala office.

A sealant is a tooth-colored or clear resin material that flows into the pits and fissures of a molar or premolar and hardens into a smooth, protective barrier. Once the groove is sealed, food debris and plaque have nowhere to settle, and the bacteria that cause decay lose their foothold. The tooth surface becomes easier to clean with a regular toothbrush.

Placing a sealant does not involve drilling, numbing, or removing tooth structure. We clean and dry the tooth, condition the enamel so the material bonds, apply the sealant, and cure it. Most patients are in and out quickly, and we often place sealants during the same visit as a dental cleaning and exam so families are not making an extra trip from Belleview, Summerfield, or Silver Springs.

Children are the most common candidates. Permanent first molars usually come in around age six and second molars around age twelve, and sealing them soon after they erupt protects the teeth through the years when cavity risk is highest. Our hygienist and dentists keep an eye on erupting molars at each checkup so we can recommend sealants at the right moment rather than after decay has already started.

Sealants are not only for kids, though. We see all ages, and adults with deep grooves and no existing fillings in those teeth can benefit as well. Patients who are more prone to decay — because of dry mouth, orthodontic treatment, frequent snacking, or a history of cavities — often get the most value from sealing vulnerable surfaces. If you are wearing Invisalign or clear aligners, protecting the chewing surfaces underneath is a reasonable precaution.

There are situations where a sealant is not the right answer. If a tooth already has decay that extends into the dentin, it needs a dental filling or another restoration instead. Part of the exam is determining which category each tooth falls into, and we will tell you plainly when a tooth needs treatment rather than a coating.

What Sealants Protect Against, and What They Do Not

A sealant covers the biting surface. It does not protect the areas between teeth or along the gumline, which is why flossing and regular cleanings still matter. Think of sealants as one layer in a broader preventive plan that also includes exams, fluoride treatment, and professional cleanings.

We also use sealants alongside other preventive care depending on what a patient needs:

  • Routine exams and cleanings to catch problems early
  • Fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel overall
  • Oral cancer screening as part of a thorough exam
  • Night guards for grinding and sports mouth guards for athletes
  • Space maintainers for children who lose a baby tooth early

Because we handle general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry in one place, anything we find during a sealant visit can be addressed here rather than referred out. Our on-site dental lab also means same-day crowns and denture work are possible when a situation calls for more than prevention.

Aftercare and How Long Results Last

There is no recovery period. You can eat and drink normally as soon as you leave, though we may suggest waiting a short while before biting into anything especially hard or sticky. Nothing about your brushing routine changes — keep brushing twice a day and flossing.

Sealants wear down gradually under years of chewing, and they can chip. At each checkup we examine the sealed surfaces and let you know if a sealant has worn thin or come loose. Reapplying is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. Avoiding ice, hard candy, and sticky caramels helps sealants last longer, which is sensible advice for natural enamel too.

Insurance, Payment, and Scheduling

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and many plans include preventive coverage for sealants, particularly for children. We are happy to file your claim and help you understand your benefits before treatment. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and flexible payment plans are available if you are coordinating care for several family members at once.

Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris have kept this practice serving Ocala and surrounding communities — including Dunnellon, The Villages, Lady Lake, Marion Oaks, and Weirsdale — for more than 30 years. If your child's molars are coming in, or you simply want fewer fillings in your future, call us to schedule an exam. We would be glad to take a look and tell you honestly whether sealants make sense.
