Mouth Guards in McIntosh

Mouth Guards in McIntosh

A cracked molar from grinding and a chipped front tooth from a weekend ball game are two very different problems with one shared solution: a custom-fitted mouth guard. For our patients from McIntosh, these thin, carefully shaped appliances are among the least expensive, least invasive ways to protect teeth that are otherwise healthy — and to avoid the crowns, root canals, and emergency visits that often follow unprotected wear or impact.

A mouth guard is a custom appliance made to fit your bite precisely. We take impressions or scans of your teeth, and the guard is fabricated to match the contours of your arch so it stays in place without constant adjusting. That fit is the whole point. Boil-and-bite versions from a store shelf cover teeth loosely, shift during sleep or activity, and can change the way your jaw closes. A guard built from your own anatomy distributes force evenly and stays where it belongs.

We make two main types here, and the difference is in the job each one does. A night guard protects against bruxism — the clenching and grinding many people do while asleep, often without knowing it. It's usually a harder, thinner material designed to absorb the slow, repetitive pressure that flattens chewing surfaces, causes hairline cracks, and leaves jaw muscles sore in the morning. A sports guard is thicker and more cushioned, built to absorb a single sudden impact — an elbow, a ball, a fall — and shield the front teeth, lips, and soft tissue. Some patients need both, since the two situations call for very different thicknesses and coverage.

You may be a candidate for a night guard if you wake with a tight or aching jaw, notice headaches near your temples, have teeth that look worn flat or feel unusually sensitive, or if a partner has heard grinding at night. We also recommend night guards for patients who have invested in crowns, veneers, bridges, or implants, since grinding forces can damage restorations just as readily as natural enamel. Because we also provide TMJ/TMD therapy and treat jaw clicking, locking, and limited movement, we can evaluate whether grinding is part of a larger jaw-joint picture rather than treating the symptom in isolation.

Sports guards suit anyone participating in contact or collision activities — football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, skateboarding, martial arts — and we fit them for both children and adults. Growing athletes from McIntosh often need a new guard as permanent teeth come in, which is one reason we like to check the fit at regular exams. Patients in orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners, should talk with us about protection during sports as well.

  • Protection for natural enamel against grinding wear and sudden impact
  • A barrier that helps safeguard existing crowns, veneers, and implants
  • Relief from morning jaw soreness and clenching-related tension
  • A precise, stable fit that doesn't shift or alter your bite
  • Coverage for lips and soft tissue during athletic activity
  • A far smaller investment than repairing a fractured tooth

How We Make Your Guard

The process starts with an exam. We look at wear patterns, check your bite, assess your jaw joints, and talk through when and how you'd use the guard. From there we capture impressions or digital scans of your upper and lower teeth.

Our on-site dental lab is a real advantage for McIntosh patients, because fabrication happens here rather than being shipped out and waited on. When your guard is ready, we check the fit, make any adjustments so it seats comfortably and your bite feels even, and show you how to insert and remove it. If anything feels off in the first few nights or practices, bring it back — small refinements are normal and quick.

Caring For It and Keeping It Working

Rinse your guard with cool water after each use, brush it gently with a soft brush, and let it air-dry before storing it in its ventilated case. Keep it away from heat — hot water, a car dashboard, a dishwasher — since warping ruins the fit. Bring it to your cleanings and exams so we can inspect it for thinning, cracks, or changes in how it seats.
