Root Canal Therapy in Marion Oaks

Root Canal Therapy in Marion Oaks

A toothache that wakes you at night, lingers after hot coffee, or throbs when you bite down usually isn't something that passes on its own. For many of our Marion Oaks patients, that pain is the first sign that the nerve inside a tooth has become inflamed or infected — and that root canal therapy may be the way to keep the tooth rather than lose it. We see these situations often, and we want you to understand what's happening inside the tooth before you ever sit in the chair.

Every tooth has a hollow interior that houses soft tissue called the pulp, made up of nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a cracked tooth, a failed filling, or a blow to the mouth can let bacteria reach that pulp. Once it becomes infected, the body can't clear it on its own, and the infection can spread into the bone around the root. Root canal therapy removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, and seals them so bacteria can't return. The outside of the tooth — the part you chew and smile with — stays in place.

The alternative to a root canal is usually extraction, which then leads to the question of how to replace the missing tooth with an implant, bridge, or partial denture. Keeping your natural tooth preserves your bite, your jawbone, and the spacing of the teeth beside it. That's why we treat root canal therapy as a tooth-saving procedure rather than a last resort, and why we encourage Marion Oaks residents not to wait out a persistent toothache.

Not every tooth is built the same, and the root canal that treats a front tooth is a different job from the one that treats a back molar. We provide all three variations in our office:

  • Anterior root canal therapy treats the incisors and canines at the front of the mouth. These teeth typically have a single, fairly straight canal, which often makes them the most straightforward to treat. They're also the most visible, so appearance after treatment matters a great deal.
  • Premolar root canal therapy treats the teeth between the canines and molars. Premolars usually have one or two canals and do real chewing work, so restoring their strength afterward is a priority.
  • Molar root canal therapy treats the large back teeth, which commonly have three or more canals that can curve and branch. Molars take the heaviest biting forces, and these cases generally take the most time and care.

You may be a candidate if you have lingering sensitivity to heat or cold, pain when chewing, swelling or tenderness in the gum near a tooth, a darkening tooth, or a deep cavity or fracture. We also handle root canal retreatment when a previously treated tooth develops new symptoms, and we treat cracked teeth and traumatic dental injuries. Because we file endodontic claims as a general practitioner, Marion Oaks patients can come directly to us — no referral is required.

What Treatment Day Looks Like

We start with an exam and imaging to confirm which tooth is involved and how many canals it has. The tooth and surrounding tissue are thoroughly numbed before we begin. We then make a small opening in the top of the tooth, remove the infected pulp, clean and shape each canal, and fill them with a sealing material. An anterior case may be completed more quickly than a multi-canal molar, and we'll tell you ahead of time what to expect for your specific tooth.

For patients who feel anxious about dental work, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation. After the canals are sealed, the tooth needs a permanent restoration — most often a crown on premolars and molars, since those teeth absorb so much chewing force. Our on-site dental lab allows us to fabricate crowns here, which keeps the restorative phase efficient.

Aftercare, Emergencies, and Payment

Mild soreness for a few days is normal, and we'll review what to take and what to eat. Chew on the other side until the final restoration is placed, keep brushing and flossing as usual, and call us if swelling or pain increases rather than fades. A restored tooth is maintained like any other — regular cleanings and exams with our hygienist help us watch it over time.

When pain shows up suddenly, we offer same-day emergency appointments so Marion Oaks patients aren't left waiting through a weekend. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and self-pay patients, and we offer flexible payment plans so cost doesn't delay care. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris see patients of all ages, continuing the care our Ocala practice has provided for more than 30 years.
