Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ/TMD) Therapy in Lady Lake

Jaw pain has a way of showing up in the small moments — the first bite of breakfast, a yawn in the middle of the afternoon, the ache that greets you when you wake up. For many of our Lady Lake patients, the problem starts quietly with a click or a tight feeling and gradually turns into headaches, sore facial muscles, or a jaw that doesn't open the way it used to. TMJ/TMD therapy exists to interrupt that pattern, and the first step is simply having someone listen carefully to what your jaw has been doing and why.
The temporomandibular joints are the two hinges that connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. They work every time you chew, speak, swallow, or yawn, which is why trouble in that area rarely stays confined to one spot. Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is the umbrella term for problems involving those joints and the muscles that move them, and the symptoms vary widely from person to person.
We regularly evaluate Lady Lake patients who describe jaw clicking, popping, locking, or limited movement; jaw-related headaches; and chronic facial pain that no one has been able to explain. Some people notice tenderness along the cheeks and temples. Others feel pressure near the ears, pain that worsens with chewing tougher foods, or morning soreness that points toward nighttime clenching and grinding. Because our office provides orofacial pain care alongside general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry, we can look at the joints, the muscles, and the way your teeth come together as one connected picture rather than three separate issues.
Your first visit is a conversation and an examination, not a commitment to treatment. We ask when the discomfort started, what makes it better or worse, whether you've had a jaw injury, and how you sleep. Then we examine how far your jaw opens, whether it deviates to one side, where it's tender, and what sounds the joints make through their range of motion. We also look at wear patterns on your teeth, since flattened edges or chipping often reveal clenching habits patients didn't know they had.
From there we explain what we're seeing in plain language and outline an approach. Conservative care usually comes first. Depending on your situation, that may include a custom night guard made to keep your teeth from grinding against one another and to ease strain on the joints, guidance on jaw rest and habits that aggravate symptoms, and attention to bite issues contributing to the problem. When worn, cracked, or missing teeth are forcing the jaw into an uncomfortable position, restorative treatment may become part of the plan. Our on-site dental lab is a real advantage here, allowing appliances and restorations to be made and adjusted efficiently without long waits between visits.
Who Benefits from TMJ/TMD Therapy
- Anyone whose jaw clicks, pops, locks, or won't open fully
- People waking with jaw soreness, tight facial muscles, or frequent headaches
- Patients who grind or clench, especially during sleep or periods of stress
- Those with chronic facial pain that hasn't been clearly diagnosed elsewhere
- Patients whose bite feels uneven after dental work, injury, or tooth loss
You do not need a referral to be seen for TMJ care at our office, which makes it straightforward for Lady Lake residents who want answers without a long chain of appointments. We treat both adults and children, so a teenager with jaw tension and a retiree with longstanding joint discomfort can both be evaluated here.
Aftercare and Long-Term Comfort
TMD care tends to work best as an ongoing relationship rather than a one-time fix. After an appliance is delivered, we check the fit and make adjustments as your muscles relax and your bite settles. We'll review how to clean and store a night guard, what level of soreness is normal early on, and which habits — chewing ice, gum, or resting your chin on your hand — tend to undo progress.
Follow-up visits give us a chance to compare your range of motion and tenderness against where you started. If symptoms change or a new issue appears, we can address it promptly, including same-day emergency appointments when something urgent comes up. Keeping up with regular exams and cleanings also helps, since our hygienists and dentists can spot new wear or bite changes before they become painful.
Insurance, Payment, and Getting Started
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice, and we welcome self-pay and cash patients. Flexible payment plans are available so cost doesn't keep you from addressing jaw pain. We'll go over expected costs before treatment begins so there are no surprises.
Lady Lake patients have trusted us alongside neighbors from The Villages, Summerfield, Oxford, and Belleview for more than 30 years. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris would be glad to take a look and help you understand what's happening with your jaw — call our office to schedule an evaluation.
