Most people first hear about their wisdom teeth during a routine exam, long before anything hurts. A panoramic X-ray shows four extra molars sitting at the back corners of the jaw, and the conversation begins: are they coming in straight, is there room for them, and what happens if they stay? Answering those questions early is one of the most practical things we do for teenagers and adults in Ocala, because timing often matters more than the procedure itself.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars, the last teeth to develop, and they typically try to erupt in the late teens or early twenties. In a jaw with enough space, they can come in fully, line up with the other molars, and stay clean with regular brushing and flossing. More often, they arrive at an angle, press against the second molars, or stay partially buried under gum tissue where a flap of gum traps food and bacteria. That trapped debris is what leads to swelling, tenderness, bad taste, and the kind of deep ache that radiates toward the ear and jaw.
Removal is the treatment when those teeth are causing problems or are clearly headed that way. Depending on how the tooth has developed, it may be a simple extraction of a fully erupted molar or a surgical extraction for a tooth that is impacted beneath bone or gum tissue. We provide both here. Because our team handles oral surgery as part of our general practice, you do not need a referral to be seen, and your care stays with the same office that knows your history, your X-rays, and your comfort preferences.
Good candidates are usually patients whose wisdom teeth are impacted, crowding neighboring teeth, repeatedly infected, decayed in a spot that cannot be restored, or impossible to keep clean. We also evaluate wisdom teeth when jaw pain or limited opening is part of the picture, since our practice treats TMJ disorders and orofacial pain and it helps to know whether a third molar is contributing. Patients who have finished or are considering orthodontic treatment often ask about third molars as well, and we are glad to discuss that in the context of your overall plan.
Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. If yours are fully erupted, functional, and cleanable, monitoring them over time is a reasonable path, and we will tell you so. When removal is recommended, we walk through the X-ray with you, explain what we see around the roots and nerves, and talk about sedation. For patients who feel anxious, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation, and we will help you decide what fits the complexity of the extraction and your own comfort level.
Recovery, Aftercare, and What Results Look Like
The first day after surgery sets the tone for the rest of healing. A blood clot needs to form and stay in place at the extraction site, so we ask patients to avoid straws, smoking, spitting, and vigorous rinsing during that early window. Rest, cold compresses, soft foods, and following the instructions we send home with you do the heavy lifting. Mild swelling and soreness are normal in the first few days and typically ease as the tissue closes over.
Here are the habits that help recovery go smoothly:
- Keep gauze in place as directed and rest with your head slightly elevated
- Stick to soft, lukewarm foods such as yogurt, eggs, and soups for the first few days
- Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses only when we tell you to start
- Take prescribed or recommended medication on schedule rather than waiting for pain
- Call us promptly if swelling, bleeding, or pain increases instead of improving
Longer term, the goal is a back-of-the-mouth area you can actually clean, free from the recurring infections and pressure that brought you in. We follow up to confirm the sites are healing well, and because we offer emergency appointments, you are never left waiting days for help if something feels off.
Insurance, Payment, and Getting Scheduled
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims for oral surgery as a general practice, which keeps the paperwork straightforward. Self-pay and cash patients are welcome, and we offer flexible payment plans so cost does not force a delay on a tooth that needs attention.
