Most dental problems don't announce themselves. A cavity forming between two back teeth, a pocket of inflammation along the gumline, a hairline crack in a molar — these rarely hurt at first, and by the time they do, the fix is usually bigger and costlier than it needed to be. Preventive dentistry is simply the habit of catching those things early, while they're still small and simple to handle.

Preventive care is the routine side of dentistry: dental exams, professional dental cleanings, X-rays when they're needed, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, and oral cancer screening. Each one does a different job. The exam is where we look at teeth, existing fillings and crowns, gum health, and the soft tissues of the mouth. The cleaning, performed by our hygienist, removes the hardened plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing at home can't lift, especially along the gumline and between teeth.

We see patients of all ages, so preventive care looks different depending on who's in the chair. For children, it often means sealants on newly erupted molars, fluoride to strengthen developing enamel, and space maintainers when a baby tooth is lost too early. For adults, it leans toward monitoring older restorations, watching for early gum disease, and screening for signs of wear from grinding. For patients who've already had periodontal treatment or implants, preventive care means periodontal maintenance and implant maintenance on a schedule that keeps what's been rebuilt healthy and stable.

A common question we hear is how often someone should come in. For many people, twice a year works well. For others — patients with a history of gum disease, dry mouth, heavy tartar buildup, diabetes, or a lot of restorative work — more frequent visits make more sense. We'll tell you plainly which group you fall into and why, rather than applying the same interval to everyone.

Another question: does any of it hurt? A routine cleaning and exam are generally comfortable. If you've gone a long time between visits or have tender, bleeding gums, a cleaning can feel more sensitive, and that's worth mentioning to us before we start. For patients who feel anxious about dental visits in general, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation dentistry, and that option applies to preventive appointments too. Nobody should skip a cleaning because the chair makes them nervous.

It's also fair to ask what happens if we find something. Sometimes the answer is nothing more than watching an area at your next visit. Other times an exam turns up a cavity, a cracked tooth, early gum disease, or an area of tissue that deserves a closer look with an oral biopsy. Because we handle restorative, periodontal, endodontic, and prosthetic care here, findings don't mean starting over somewhere else — and our on-site dental lab allows for same-day crowns, dentures, and denture repairs when treatment is needed.

What Happens Between Visits

Preventive dentistry only works if the at-home half holds up. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between teeth, and limiting how often you sip sugary or acidic drinks across the day do more for your teeth than almost anything we do in the office. We'll give you specific, practical pointers based on what we actually see in your mouth — where plaque is collecting, which tooth you're missing with the floss, whether your gums are responding.

Protective appliances are part of this, too. If you grind or clench at night, a custom night guard can spare your enamel and existing crowns from years of wear; if clenching is tied to jaw pain, clicking, or headaches, we also provide TMJ/TMD therapy. For athletes of any age, a sports mouth guard is a small investment against a knocked-out or fractured tooth. And if something does go wrong between checkups, we offer emergency dental appointments.

  • Results people typically notice: cleaner-feeling teeth, less bleeding when brushing, fresher breath, fewer surprises at future visits, and problems addressed while they're still small.

Insurance, Payment, and Getting Started

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice, which includes our periodontal, endodontic, orthodontic, and prosthodontic services. Preventive care is often among the better-covered categories in dental plans, and our front desk can walk you through what your specific plan includes before treatment begins. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans when a treatment need extends beyond routine care.
