Oral Cancer Screening in The Villages

Most people think of a dental visit as a check for cavities and a cleaning. But some of the most important few minutes of that appointment happen when we look at the soft tissues — the tongue, cheeks, palate, throat, and lips. An oral cancer screening is quick, painless, and one of the simplest ways to catch a change early, while it is still small and easy to address. For our patients in The Villages, it is a routine part of the care we provide, not an add-on you have to remember to ask about.
An oral cancer screening is a careful visual and physical examination of the inside of your mouth and the surrounding head and neck structures. We look for sores that have not healed, white or red patches, rough or thickened areas, unexplained bleeding, and changes in the color or texture of tissue. We also gently feel along the jaw, under the chin, and around the neck to check for lumps or firmness in the lymph nodes, and we ask about symptoms you may not connect to your mouth — hoarseness, a persistent sore throat, numbness, or difficulty swallowing or chewing.
The reason this matters is simple: the mouth is one of the few places in the body a clinician can examine directly and thoroughly, without imaging or incisions. Changes in soft tissue often appear before they cause discomfort, which is why so many early findings are discovered at a routine dental exam rather than by the patient at home. Our hygienists and dentists, Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris, have examined a great many mouths over our more than 30 years of practice in the area, and that familiarity with what healthy tissue looks like is what makes an unusual spot stand out.
Adults of every age benefit from regular screening, and we perform it for our patients across the full age range we treat. Risk rises with age, and it also rises with tobacco use of any kind, heavy alcohol use, significant sun exposure to the lips, and a history of HPV. The Villages is home to a great many active retirees who spend considerable time outdoors, which makes lip and facial tissue worth a second look at each visit.
You are also a good candidate for a focused evaluation if you have noticed something specific: a sore that has lasted more than two weeks, a lump you can feel with your tongue, a denture that has suddenly started rubbing a new spot, or a patch of tissue that looks different from the area around it. We accept patients without a referral, so you do not need to work through another office first. If you have never had a screening, or it has been years since your last dental visit, that is a reason to come in rather than a reason to put it off.
- The exam is painless, takes only a few minutes, and requires no needles, dyes, or recovery time
- It is included as part of a routine dental exam, so it fits into a visit you are already scheduling
- Findings are explained to you in plain language, with photos or notes when helpful
- If something needs a closer look, we can perform an oral biopsy in our office
- We see patients of all ages and accept new patients without a referral
What Happens During and After Your Visit
We begin by reviewing your health history and asking about habits and symptoms. Then we examine the lips, the inside of the cheeks, the floor and roof of the mouth, the gums, and the tongue — including lifting it and looking along the sides and underneath, where changes are easiest to miss. We use gauze to gently hold and move the tongue, and we palpate the neck and jaw. There is no preparation required on your part.
Most screenings end with good news and a note in your chart so we have a baseline to compare against at your next visit. If we find an area of concern, that does not automatically mean something serious — many spots are irritation from a sharp tooth, a denture edge, or a cheek bite. We may ask you to return in two weeks to see whether it has resolved, adjust whatever is causing the irritation, or recommend a biopsy for a definitive answer. We will tell you clearly what we saw, what we think it likely is, and what the next step should be.
Scheduling, Insurance, and Payment
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and oral cancer screening is typically performed as part of a routine exam. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer flexible payment plans if you would like to spread out the cost of any follow-up treatment.
Patients come to our Ocala office from The Villages, Lady Lake, Oxford, Summerfield, and the surrounding communities. Because we also offer emergency appointments, a concerning sore or sudden change does not have to wait weeks. Call us, tell us what you are noticing, and we will find you a time.
