Periodontal Surgery in The Villages

Bleeding gums that never quite settle down, teeth that feel longer than they used to, or a pocket your hygienist keeps measuring and re-measuring — these are the signals that gum disease has moved past what cleanings alone can reach. When the supporting bone and tissue around a tooth have been damaged, surgery becomes the tool that repairs what scaling cannot. We treat patients from The Villages who have reached that point, and our goal is always the same: stop the disease, rebuild what we can, and keep natural teeth in place.
Periodontal surgery is a group of procedures that treat the gums and bone holding your teeth. Gum disease creates deep pockets between the tooth and tissue where bacteria collect out of reach of a toothbrush or a standard cleaning. When scaling and root planing does not fully resolve those pockets, surgical access allows us to clean the root surfaces thoroughly, reduce pocket depth, and address bone loss directly.
The term covers several distinct treatments. Gum grafting replaces tissue lost to recession, covering exposed roots that have become sensitive or vulnerable to decay. Periodontal regeneration works to rebuild bone and attachment that disease has destroyed. Crown lengthening reshapes gum and bone to expose more tooth structure, often so a crown or filling can be placed properly. Gingivectomy and gum contouring remove or reshape excess tissue, sometimes for health reasons and sometimes to even out a smile that looks gummy or uneven. We also place dental implants and perform bone grafting and sinus lift surgery when a tooth cannot be saved.
Most candidates come to us one of two ways. Some have been through nonsurgical gum treatment and still have deep pockets, ongoing bleeding, or loosening teeth. Others arrive with recession that has exposed root surfaces, a tooth broken too close to the gumline to restore, or an existing implant that needs attention.
Not every case needs surgery, and we will tell you plainly if it does not. Evaluation begins with a full exam, pocket measurements, and imaging to see the bone level around each tooth. We also screen for oral cancer as part of our exams and can perform an oral biopsy if tissue needs to be examined. If your gum disease can be controlled with scaling and root planing followed by periodontal maintenance visits, that is the path we recommend first. Surgery is for the situations where conservative care has run its course.
You do not need a referral to be seen for periodontal care here. Patients from The Villages frequently come to us directly, and we also work with people who have been treated elsewhere and want the next phase handled in one place.
What the Process Looks Like
Treatment is planned before anything begins. We walk you through which procedure is recommended, what it addresses, and how many visits to expect. Nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation are available for patients who feel anxious about surgical appointments, and we use laser dentistry where it fits the treatment.
Here is what patients can generally expect:
- A diagnostic visit with exam, periodontal charting, and imaging
- A treatment discussion covering options, sequence, and insurance
- The surgical appointment itself, with local anesthetic and sedation if chosen
- A follow-up visit to check healing and remove sutures if placed
- Ongoing periodontal maintenance cleanings to protect the result
Aftercare matters as much as the procedure. Expect some swelling and tenderness for a few days, a soft-food period, and specific instructions on how to clean the area without disturbing healing. We will give you those instructions in writing and go over them before you leave. If something feels wrong afterward, call us — we keep room for emergency appointments and would rather see you early than late.
Care That Fits a Trip from The Villages
Driving for dental care is easier when fewer trips are required. Our on-site dental lab lets us make crowns, dentures, and denture repairs in-house, which matters when periodontal surgery is part of a larger plan involving crown lengthening and a new crown, or extractions and an implant-supported restoration. Combining steps into fewer appointments is something we actively plan for with patients traveling from The Villages.
We have practiced in this area for more than 30 years, and our team — including Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris — treats patients of all ages. We are members of the FDA and the Central Florida District Dental Association.
Insurance, Self-Pay, and Payment Plans
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file periodontal claims as a general practice. Many plans cover a meaningful portion of periodontal surgery, and we will help you understand your benefits before treatment rather than after.
Self-pay patients are welcome, and flexible payment plans are available so the cost can be spread out. If you are weighing treatment against budget, tell us — we would rather build a sequence you can actually complete than present a plan that stalls.
