A small twinge when you sip iced tea, a dark line in a back tooth you spotted while brushing, or a rough edge your tongue keeps finding — these are the everyday signals that often bring people to us for a filling. Cavities rarely announce themselves loudly at first, and that is exactly why treating them early matters. A filling takes care of decay while it is still small, keeps the healthy part of the tooth intact, and spares you the bigger, costlier treatment that decay can lead to if it reaches the nerve.
A dental filling is a restoration that removes decayed tooth structure and replaces it with a durable material that rebuilds the tooth's shape, strength, and chewing surface. Decay is caused by bacteria that feed on sugars and produce acids, and once those acids break through the outer enamel, the damage does not heal on its own. Cleaning out the affected area and sealing it closes the door on bacteria and restores a smooth, functional surface you can chew and floss around normally.
Fillings help a wide range of patients. We see children with their first cavities, teenagers navigating braces and busy sports schedules, adults with older restorations that have worn or chipped, and seniors dealing with decay around the gumline where roots are exposed. Because we treat all ages under one roof, families from Ocala, Belleview, Summerfield, The Villages, and the surrounding Marion County communities can schedule together rather than driving to several offices. Fillings also come into play after a minor chip or fracture, where composite bonding can rebuild a damaged edge and blend with your natural tooth color.
Most people want to know two things before they sit down: will it hurt, and how long will it take. In the vast majority of cases, a filling is a single-visit appointment handled comfortably with local anesthetic. For patients who feel anxious — and plenty of people do — we offer nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation so the visit feels calm and manageable. If dental appointments have been difficult for you in the past, tell us at the start. We would much rather adjust the plan than have you put off care.
It also helps to know that not every ache means a filling will solve the problem. If decay has reached the nerve, root canal therapy may be the right answer, and we perform root canals on front teeth, premolars, and molars without requiring a referral. If a tooth is cracked or a large portion of structure is missing, an onlay or a crown may protect it better than a filling would. Our on-site dental lab means crowns can often be completed the same day rather than stretching across weeks with a temporary. Dr. Hussein Salifu and Dr. Marco Geris will walk you through what the tooth actually needs and why, using your exam and X-rays as the starting point for that conversation.
Aftercare and What Results Look Like
Numbness from local anesthetic usually wears off within a couple of hours, and we recommend waiting until full sensation returns before eating so you do not accidentally bite your cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days afterward is common, especially with deeper fillings, and it typically settles down on its own. What should not happen is a bite that feels high or off — if chewing feels uneven once the numbness fades, call us and we will adjust it quickly.
Caring for a filling is refreshingly ordinary:
- Brush twice daily and floss around the restored tooth just as you would any other
- Keep up with regular cleanings and exams so we can check the restoration's margins
- Limit frequent sipping of sugary or acidic drinks, which fuels new decay
- Wear a night guard if you grind, since clenching shortens the life of any restoration
- Mention new sensitivity or rough spots early rather than waiting for your next visit
Fillings are durable, but they are not permanent, and they do not make a tooth immune to future decay. Preventive care — cleanings, fluoride treatment, and sealants for children — is what protects your investment over the long run.
Insurance, Payment, and Scheduling
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims as a general practice, which keeps billing straightforward across restorative, periodontal, and endodontic care. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and flexible payment plans are available if you would rather spread treatment costs over time.
If a tooth is hurting right now, we offer emergency appointments, including same-day visits for urgent problems. We have cared for Ocala-area families for over 30 years, and we would be glad to look after yours. Call our office to schedule your exam and let us take care of that cavity before it grows.
